Hive customers hot up in 32°C heatwave glitch

Smart home owners forced to get their sweat on as Hive iPhone app accidentally turns the heat up to maximum.

You’ve seen the catchy TV ads…  ‘Hive is busy controlling your heating at home’.

Well this weekend, it was revealed that the smart home heating service has been a little too busy.

Instead of allowing customers to monitor and maintain sensibly snug temperatures from their smartphones, it’s been sending house temperatures soaring to highs of 32°C.

Hive, which is run by British Gas, has received over 30 complaints in recent months it was reported on Saturday, with many people fearing an unsightly spike in their bills.

The company has not yet confirmed exactly how many of its 300,000 users may have been affected, although they have said that the bug is now fixed.

It said in a statement: “We are aware of a temporary glitch affecting a very small number of customers, where a certain sequence of commands in the Hive iOS app can cause the thermostat temperature to rise to 32°C.

“Any customers seeing this can very easily and immediately fix it by simply turning the thermostat down using the app, web dashboard or the thermostat itself.

“No-one needs to worry about their temperature being too high because the rest of the app works as normal. Meanwhile, we are working on a software update which should be available soon.”

Swelter or freeze?

By contrast, rival smart service Nest gave its customers the cold shoulder last month, with an unconfirmed number of people waking up to an unexpected chill.

At best we know that smart homes can be super convenient. But beware, as with any new technology their will be kinks to iron out. Expect the occasional swelter or freeze.
